Depending on the intended use, certain IP speakers are more suited than others for particular applications. With the aim to make your selection of speakers more direct, Algo has composed the following article and cheat sheet so you can choose the speaker that will give you the best result in your target environment.
Although it may seem like all of the speakers are the same, and certainly some of them look completely identical, each of the Algo speakers was designed for a distinct purpose and has its own unique functionality.
Common Functionality of Algo IP Speakers
Algo’s IP-based speakers are SIP-compliant, multicast-capable devices that can integrate seamlessly with most leading Unified Communication, Collaboration, Mass Notification, and VoIP telephone systems. All Algo IP speakers are PoE or PoE+ powered for ease of connectivity and include wideband audio and G.722 voice codec for HD voice quality output. Wideband (G.722) audio provides optimal speech intelligibility to ensure voice paging and emergency notification messages are clearly understood.
All Algo speakers include additional performance-enhancing features such as:
- Embedded microphone to enable two-way speech (talkback capability) and ambient noise response.
- Network Configurable via an intuitive web interface
- Internal memory to store pre-recorded WAV files

Algo IP Speakers You Should Consider
Wall Speakers
8180 IP Audio Alerter. The 8180 is an IP paging speaker that delivers impressive audio performance in a small form factor and is particularly optimized for voice paging, emergency alerting, and loud ringing. Designed to deliver attention-grabbing audio, this audio alerter can easily break through background noise and provide effective alerting. The small, sleek frame allows it to blend and fit in any indoor environment.
Typical applications: workshop, cafeteria, office, hallway, classroom
8190 IP Speaker – Clock. The 8190 is an integrated IP Speaker and high visibility clock designed for education and commercial public address. The 8190 is PoE+ powered and includes a four-speaker line array that creates ideal audio distribution. The 8190 features a high visibility clock that automatically functions on a network time protocol. This IP speaker also includes a backlit call button to initiate a telephone call for hands-free two-way communication which is often deployed to enable communication between classrooms and the administration office.

8190S IP Speaker – Clock and Visual Alerter. The 8190S is an integrated IP Speaker and high visibility clock featuring a multi-color strobe light, designed for education and commercial public address. The 8190S offers the same functionality as the 8190 but with the addition of visual alerting via the multi-color strobe lights. Four color options (amber, blue, green, red) are offered in the strobe as well as a variety of flash patterns; when combined, the multiple colors and flash patterns can be used to signal different events, such as evacuation, lockdown, or all clear. Like the 8190, the 8190S is PoE+ powered, works on network time protocol, and includes an integrated backlit call button to initiate a telephone call for hands-free two-way communication.

Ceiling Speakers
8188 IP Ceiling Speaker. Designed for drop-ceiling applications, this public address (PA) IP speaker is optimized for paging and background music. The Algo 8188 delivers wideband G.722 audio for better intelligibility and music experience, meaning that it provides deeper and richer audio that allows for more clarity and understanding.
Typical applications: Classroom, single office, hallways, etc.
8198 IP PoE+ Ceiling Speaker with 1198 Satellite Speaker. Designed for drop ceiling applications, the 8198 sound and look identical to the 8188 IP Ceiling Speaker but comes equipped to support Algo’s corresponding 1198 Satellite Speaker Technology. This patented method of driving and supervising multiple satellite speakers reduces required network ports and cable drops while maintaining all of the benefits of IP paging. The 8198 is ideal for voice paging, emergency alerting and background music, and the 1198 satellite speaker is optimally deployed with the 8198 in large common environments.
Typical applications: Hallways, cafeteria, library, retail, etc.
8189 IP Surface-Mount Speaker. Designed for surface mount applications, the 8189 speaker delivers similar audio performance to the 8188 IP Ceiling Speaker but can be mounted directly to a flat wall or ceiling surface. The 8189 is encased in a metal shell and is optimized for paging, playing music, and emergency alerting for use in any size building.
Typical applications: Classrooms, offices, hallways, etc.
Horn Speakers
8186 IP Horn Speaker. Designed for industrial and outdoor environments, the 8186 IP Horn speaker is a durable, weatherproof, outdoor-rated, speaker capable of delivering very high levels of audio output. The 8186 is PoE powered, self-amplified, and is optimized for voice paging, emergency alerting, and loud ringing to pierce through any noisy environments. Delivering a maximum audio output of 116 dB, the 8186 delivers high quality audio engineered to be heard through even the most challenging environments.
Typical applications: Warehouse, factory, and outdoors.
8196 IP PoE+ Horn Speaker with 1196 Satellite Speaker. Designed for industrial and outdoor environments, the 8196 IP Horn speaker is a durable, weatherproof, outdoor-rated speaker capable of delivering very high levels of audio output. The 8196 sounds and looks the same as the 8186 IP Horn Speaker but comes equipped to support the Algo’s corresponding 1196 Satellite Speaker Technology. This patented method of driving and supervising multiple satellite speakers reduces required network ports and cable drops while maintaining all of the benefits of IP paging. The most common application is deploying and 8196 back-to-back with one satellite speaker, however, up to three satellite speakers may be powered and supervised by a single 8196. Delivering a maximum audio output of 119 dB, the 8196 delivers high quality audio engineered to be heard through even the most challenging environments.
