FXS vs FXO Ports in Algo Intercoms
Algo analog intercoms offer different features and functionalities from FXS vs FXO ports. FXS ports enable connectivity to analog devices, such as phones, facilitating seamless integration with existing analog infrastructure. FXO ports enable connectivity to external telephone lines, extending the reach of communication beyond the local network. Algo analog intercoms leverage these ports, offering flexible communication solutions.
On-Premise Phone Systems
On-premise telephone systems often contain two types of analog telephone ports: FXO vs FXS ports. FXO ports typically connect the internal system to external phone lines, while FXS ports connect to devices, such as phones. These systems are often hybrid, supporting both analog and VoIP. These allow analog intercoms to communicate with and make phone calls to other types of devices, including SIP phones.
Understanding FXS vs FXO Ports
FXS Ports
FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) ports connect to analog devices, such as phones, fax machines, or modems. FXS ports act as the source end, supplying voltage to power devices, providing ring voltage and dial tone. The phone or device connected to this port controls the state of on-hook / off-hook.
FXO Ports
FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) ports typically connect to analog phone lines by the phone company Central Office (CO). FXO Ports act as the endpoint that receives the voltage provided by the CO and terminates the line. FXO ports emulate a telephone and thus controls the on-hook / off-hook state.
Algo FXS and FXO Intercoms
Algo designs VoIP analog intercoms compatible with both analog FXS and FXO ports. Algo intercoms offer secure door control and two-way visitor communication at entry points of buildings or enterprises.
Visitors may press the call button on the intercom station to initiate calling a designated number configured in the device. Any telephone, device or client on the UC platform may communicate with the Doorphone if integrated to the telephone system. Calling the device is also available from any telephone or device.

3226 Trunk Port FXO Doorphone
The 3226 intercom is a VoIP analog intercom that connects to an FXO port on an on-premise telephone system.
3228 Station Port (FXS) Doorphone
The 3228 intercom is an analog door intercom that connects to an FXS port on an on-premise telephone system.
Which Algo Analog Intercom to Buy
Choosing an Algo analog intercom will depend on which type of port (analog FXS vs FXO) is available on the phone system. If the system only contains an FXS port, the 3228 is available. If the system only contains an FXO port, the 3226 is available.
If both are available, Algo recommends using the 3226 connected to the FXO port as it allows the phone system to control the on-hook / off-hook state rather than needing disconnect supervision.
