The e-mobility industry is growing extremely fast. The number of electric vehicles (EVs) and charge points is increasing every month.

The market is expanding not only in existing segments but also in new ones. There is strong interest in charge points and services for electric trucks and larger fleets. As volumes grow, markets that were once niche are expanding and becoming vibrant, resulting in new entrants into the market. This further leads to the development of new business models and customer needs.

To support the existing and fresh industry requirements and fast acceleration to sustainable mobility, we help our EMSP and CPO customers deliver on their promise of charging anywhere, anytime, through our roaming network.

GreenFlux’s roaming network is spread across Europe.

Our EMSP and CPO customers do not need to establish hundreds of technical connections and contracts or worry about compliance or financial settlement with any external networks. We do all that for them.

By opting for our managed roaming service, CPO and EMSP customers give their EV drivers access to GreenFlux’s extensive roaming network. This is different from self-managed roaming, wherein customers choose to manage their own roaming partner agreements.

And the good news is that now we operate one of the biggest EV roaming networks, with over half a million charge points spread across Europe.

500,000+ EV charge points and counting!

We have come a long way. Our roaming network consisted of around 185,000 charge points at the end of 2021. We witnessed exponential growth, almost tripling the number of charge points within two years. And this does not stop here.

We added more than 30 partners in 2023 itself. We will continue to expand our network and help our partners make on-the-go charging easy for their drivers.

‘There are a number of differentiators for EMSPs in this young but fast-growing market, and of those, the size of the network is probably the most important and certainly the most visible one,’ said Rutger Plantenga, managing director and chief product officer at GreenFlux.

Our extensive EV roaming network

We are constantly investing heavily to have good coverage in all European markets.

‘While some markets were historically less open to roaming, we now see all markets gradually opening up. Even so, significant investments are going into being compliant in every market, both from legal and fiscal viewpoints as well as in terms of the technical standards used,’ added Rutger.

With new partnerships, we have nearly 100 percent roaming coverage in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, and Austria. And we are fast expanding in other countries, such as Spain, Norway, Hungary, Sweden, and the UK, to name a few.

In France, we expanded rapidly this year by signing new contracts with sustainable partners and growing our network with the existing ones. EV drivers of our customers can now charge stress-free in France thanks to our new contracts with Endesa, Power Dot, Electra, and QPark, to name a few. This year we also grew our network size with Alizè Libertè, Belib Paris, Driveco, Freshmile, and Indigo Park, among others.

We have always had a comprehensive roaming network in the Netherlands. But now our EMSP and CPO customers can promise 100 percent coverage to their drivers as we signed new contracts with some smart partners like Awesems and Robo Charge, among others.

On similar lines, EV drivers of our customers can access most of the biggest, fastest, and most reliable EV charging networks in Germany and Austria.

We now have partnerships with SMATRICS EnBW, which operates one of the largest high-speed charging networks in both countries.

Smatrics charge station

We further expanded our network in Austria with our existing partners, such as Salzburg AG, Wein Energie, and Tiwag, to name a few. Our network also marked massive growth in Germany by adding several charge points to our existing collaboration with Mer Germany, E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI), EnBW, INOITY, and Smartlab.

Another country where our customers can promise 100 percent coverage for their drivers is Belgium. This year we signed new contracts with Bluecorner, Powerdale, and Q8 Electric. And expanded our network with existing partners like Amano, Energytix, Optimile, and Q8 Electric.

The numbers are constantly increasing elsewhere, too. We signed and grew our network in Spain, Norway, Hungary, Sweden, and the UK, to name a few.

Source London charging station

We now have roaming partnerships with Vattenfall InCharge (Sweden), TEA Mobilitas (Hungary), Electromaps (Spain), Endesa (Spain), Iberdrola (Spain), Wenea (Spain), Power Dot (Spain), Source London (UK), Osprey (UK), and Ubitricity (UK).

Roam freely: Eliminating charging anxiety

Roaming enables EV drivers to charge outside of their immediate network, in different locations, using their existing e-mobility apps and charge card services, or using any other payment method. The fear of not being able to do so is what gives them anxiety.

Our mission is to eliminate this very concern. With GreenFlux’s roaming network, over 500,000 charge points are accessible to EV drivers of our CPO and EMSP customers.

In addition, while contributing towards improving the EV charging infrastructure, EV roaming also enables new revenue streams for CPOs and helps them stay ahead of the curve in the industry.

With our roaming-as-a-service model, both our CPO and EMSP partners can offer leading roaming coverage under their own brands, pricing, and propositions. Plus, they can monetise their business quickly and effectively and scale operations.

Do not hesitate. Reach out!

Accelerating the transition towards sustainable mobility since 2011, GreenFlux now enables a roaming network of 500.000+ charging points accessible to millions of drivers throughout Europe.

Are you our platform customer and wish to expand your roaming network? Or are you a CPO and want to open your network to millions of our partners EV drivers? Reach out!

We provide CPOs and EMSPs with the flexibility to decide their own roaming contracts and run their businesses the way they want to. We offer roaming service options for partners to:

  • Leverage our existing 500.000+ charge point network.
  • Negotiate their contracts while we manage the technical connection.
  • Tap into new revenue streams.
  • Make their charging network visible and accessible.
  • Increase the use of charge points.
  • Attract new drivers.
  • Strengthen the loyalty of existing customers.

We have always been proud of our smart charging solutions at GreenFlux.

Our smart charging technology is run from the cloud and applied using open standards, giving customers real-time control over any type of charge station. These solutions help CPOs save on infrastructure costs and yearly fees by facilitating the installation of more charge stations on existing grid connections. Further, they provide the opportunity for operators to monetise the flexibility of EV charging and facilitate charging even more vehicles with energy from renewable energy sources, namely the sun, and wind.

Our customers are already utilising smart charging on a large scale on AC (alternating current) charge stations in cities such as Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Read here: Local vs. cloud-based smart charging: Should you make the switch?

Now, we launched the world’s first large-scale, cloud-based, and hardware-agnostic smart charging algorithm for DC fast charge stations. The launch marks a new milestone in the EV charging solutions and software provider’s pursuit of enabling the smartest e-mobility services in the world.

Read here: GreenFlux introduces the world’s first large-scale, hardware-agnostic DC smart charging algorithm

Complementing our other smart charging offerings, this new DC-specific algorithm is designed to make sure that the combined power consumption of a group of charge stations automatically stays below a certain limit. The algorithm has already been incorporated into our commercial portfolio and used at scale in the market by its customers.

‘Smart charging has become even smarter. Our new algorithm, designed specifically for DC charge stations, brings all of the advantages of a cloud-based solution to DC charging hubs. Now, charge point operators (CPOs) can sustainably expand their fast-charging network without any concerns,’ said Bob Elders, Product Manager, Smart Charging at GreenFlux.

AC vs. DC charging

Our power grid delivers AC power. Batteries store power as DC (direct current). Every time a battery charges with energy from the grid, AC is converted to DC.

This AC-to-DC power conversion happens everywhere: when you charge your mobile phone, and also when you charge your EV.

With an AC charge station, the converter is built into the EV. However, a DC charge station has a converter built into the charger itself. This means the charge station supplies power directly to the EV battery. As charge stations can be equipped with much larger components in comparison to EVs, this allows for much higher charging power.

AC vs DC Chargers

Unique features of fast charging

Duration

AC chargers are found at home, at the office, or on the street. EVs are usually connected to a charge station for 8–12 hours.

DC chargers are common near the highway, where drivers want to charge only as long as necessary and continue their trip as soon as possible. These fast-charging sessions are usually quite short. Also, DC charging sessions are normally stopped when the battery reaches 80 percent (state-of-charge).

Charging power

A typical AC charger delivers between 3 and 22 kW of power. For DC chargers, this is nothing. The fast chargers can deliver up to 350 kW of power. In the future, even higher charging powers will likely be possible.

Charging curves

AC charging sessions for different EV types follow a standard charging curve. The charge rate is mostly constant, and when the battery is almost full, it slowly drops to 0.

For DC, the charging rate can vary a lot throughout the charging session. Depending on the EV model, it may decrease stepwise as the battery gets fuller, or it may go towards 0 asymptotically. Almost no charging curve is the same.

Why smart charge on fast chargers?

DC chargers are appearing at more and more locations, within cities, on the road, and around business locations. They are essential in our transition to full electric mobility.

‘As the smart charging innovation leader, GreenFlux was quick to identify the need for cloud-based hardware agnostic smart charging with DC-chargers, which could be applied on a large scale. With many years of experience dynamically managing thousands of AC-charging clusters, we now increasingly see larger clusters of DC-chargers emerging, for instance at highway charging hubs as well as at fleet and depot hubs,’ said Rutger Plantenga, MD and Chief Product Officer at GreenFlux.

The electric vehicle (EV) market is growing exponentially, and the electricity required to charge EVs will create additional demand and stress on the electricity grid, especially at the local level. But most grid connections can only handle so much, so we need to adapt our solutions.

In addition, the capacity of grid connections is limited for more reasons than one. For instance, either the grid operator does not allow the capacity to expand or it is prohibitively expensive to do so. Therefore, it is important to make use of your grid connection as efficiently as possible. And a perfect way to do so is via smart charging.

DC smart charging is a big deal!

The combination of the factors mentioned above indicates that one cannot simply apply an algorithm designed for AC chargers to DC chargers, as it would not be efficient.

Display of DC smart charging algorithm in use

Figure 1: The DC smart charging algorithm applied on a commercial site of one of our customers. The red line on the top indicates available capacity. Each color bar indicates an individual EV (or EVSE). Height of the bar indicates how much capacity our smart charging algorithm allocates. The allocation may vary throughout the session as our algorithm adapts to the actual needs of the EV. Our allocation changes throughout the session and the total never exceeds 106 (the maximum).

With more and more fast chargers appearing on the highways, we felt the growing need to charge smartly on DC charge stations. So we did it – we resolved the complexities and overcame the challenges to develop a new algorithm tailored specifically for DC chargers.

Our entirely new DC Smart Charging algorithm will help CPOs overcome their concerns. This will help them expand their fast-charging network quicker and charge even more vehicles with energy from renewable energy sources.

GreenFlux's DC Smart Charging algorithm in use

Figure 2: GreenFlux’s DC Smart Charging algorithm in use on a large-scale network.

As the algorithm runs in the cloud, customers in the future can apply smart charging not just on any DC charge station but also on any combination of DC and AC charge stations. This means CPOs are not limited to a single charge station manufacturer.

In addition, considering the investment required to setup and manage DC-charging hubs, avoiding hardware-vendor lock-in and maximising revenue potential are critically important. This is exactly what our new DC Smart Charging solution is designed to do.

About Smart Charging

Smart charging is defined as increasing or decreasing the maximum charge rate of an EV over a set period of time. Smart charging is a means to optimise power distribution and charge more electric vehicles at the same time and at a faster rate. Its utilisation leads to considerable savings for grid operators, CPOs, charge point owners, and EV drivers. Cloud-based smart charging can be implemented dynamically and in response to different triggers, such as capacity limitations (static or dynamic) and energy tariff fluctuations. Plus, GreenFlux’s smart charging solutions can be applied to any type or brand of charge station.

Our purpose at GreenFlux is to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility. We pursue this by thinking along with our customers, creating and bringing to them new solutions and features. Some of the innovative solutions we have brought to market were iterated initially with the support of European Union funding. Subsidy projects present excellent opportunities to explore and develop early-stage ideas and new products, as they provide funding for collaboration on complex matters with fellow innovators.

One of the subsidy projects in which GreenFlux participated was the Horizon 2020 project CONNECT, commencing in 2017. We started this project with a novel and basic smart charging algorithm, in which it was enhanced and tested in a complex, real-life situation at a commuter park & ride station in the Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. With the improvements made, the grid connection in Den Bosch was successfully protected by smart charging the electric vehicles onsite, whilst taking local renewable energy generation, a bus charger and local battery storage into account. In addition, peak electricity demand at the site was decreased by 71%. The enhancements within CONNECT made taking other sources into account successful and possible, bringing the smart charging algorithm to the next level.

Another project in which we are currently involved is INCIT-EV, where we collaborate with a group of 33 partners to accelerate the deployment of EV charging infrastructure across Europe. The project began in 2020 and will run until 2024, and we contribute to it in various ways. One of our main focuses in this project is to develop payment mechanisms related to EV charging. This includes expanding tariff options for charging while improving pricing transparency for EV drivers. To future-proof payment methods, we are integrating with contactless payment terminals and have built new functionalities in the Charge Assist app, allowing EV drivers to pay with their debit or credit card.

In addition to these new functionalities in Charge Assist, we are improving the quality of information of charge locations, providing more accurate information such as exact location, availability, and the number of charge points. Lastly, we are developing an algorithm to utilize smart charging on charge stations in Haarlem to alleviate grid congestion in the city. This solution will reduce the impact of EV charging on the electricity grid and help reduce costs. Overall, our efforts in INCIT-EV aim to enhance the EV charging experience, encourage EV adoption, and promote a sustainable transportation system.

These projects are allowing GreenFlux to build solid foundations for technologies such as smart charging and payment solutions. After CONNECT, the smart charging algorithm continued to evolve and develop, maturing into the industry-leading solution we offer commercially today, thus providing value to both our customers and their end users.

We are continuously on the lookout for potential new subsidy projects that advance the collective understanding of what is currently possible in the field of electric vehicle charging. The field is ripe with opportunity for future-looking innovation –  driver experience, payments, access, V2X, energy management, and much more.

If your organisation is interested in exploring new possibilities and creating innovative products, we at GreenFlux would love to hear from you and discuss collaboration opportunities in new projects. We believe that working together, we can continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of electric mobility and create solutions that are beneficial for everyone.

The energy mix is changing.

We are increasingly shifting from CO2-emitting energy to energy from the sun and wind. How can we ensure that drivers are encouraged to charge their cars during periods of lower demand and greater availability of renewable energy?

Complementing our patented smart charging algorithm, we’re introducing time-of-use tariffs! What do we mean by this?

Dynamic rates: fair pricing throughout the session

We help CPOs set different rates during the day, per charging station. We apply the correct rate throughout a charging session. Do you start charging at 6 p.m., but is the rate lower at 6:30 p.m.? From that moment onward, the kWh will be charged at the new, lower rate. It seems only fair, right?

Price transparency: No surprise in price

In our Charge Assist app, drivers can see the rate that applies for the next 24 hours, so they are not faced with any surprises afterward.

Together with our Smart Charging algorithm, which allows us to adjust the charging speed based on the predicted available energy, we can now also align the price to this capacity. With this, drivers can charge at a lower cost while at the same time topping up their vehicles with renewable energy.

Reach out to us if interested in matching EV charging demand with dynamic pricing.
